G V Venugopala Sarma belonging to the IAS 1986 Batch has worked at the level of Secretary to Government of India
in the Ministry of Home Affairs as Member Secretary National Disaster Management Authority.
He has contributed to transparency and accountability in the Ministry of Home Affairs by bringing in several e-Governance projects relating to foreigners' visa issues, FCRA and citizenship issues; and also land registration in Odisha. His played a leadership role during the Super cyclone of 1999 and other national disasters like the Kedarnath calamity.
He has distinguished himself in the fields of social sector while working in Nagaland and Odisha States. His contributions in rural poverty reduction programmes, Panchayati Raj, ST & SC Development, Women and Child Development, Disability welfare, Higher Education, MSME, Disaster management and land administration – are widely recognised. He was a member of the Expert Group constituted by Government of India in 2001 on preventing tribal land alienation. He was Member-Secretary of Task Force on disaster management, constituted by Government of India in 2011. He also worked as a Visiting Fellow in NIRD, Hyderabad.
Sri Sarma has done Masters in Physics and is interested in issues concerning the poor and the tribals.
