Aakanksha

A proud alumnus of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Aakanksha completed her Masters in Social Work with a specialization in Mental Health in 2019.

Her graduate program in Psychology cemented her passion in the field of mental health. Her experience with the NSS allowed her to interact with various civil society organizations in the sector. Aakanksha's postgraduate research revolved around studying various mental well-being practices in assisted living facilities for the elderly. Her field work immersions have focused on the areas of multiple disabilities and psychiatric rehabilitation in both clinical and community setups. For the next couple of years at The Banyan in Maharashtra, Aakanksha served as the Programme Co-Lead under the Centre for Mental Health and Inclusive Development. During this time, she helped set up Home Again, a model to deinstitutionalize persons with a history of mental illness and homelessness. Through a collaboration with the Health Department, Govt of Maharashtra, Aakanksha ensured the implementation of the Mental Health Care Act, 2017 and the establishment of a Mental Health Review Board across districts. Most recently, she completed a Fellowship programme at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bengaluru specializing in Psychosocial care for the geriatric population. Aakanksha's long-term professional vision includes entrepreneurial ventures in the social sector involving public policy initiatives. Her paramount interest in an equitable society keeps her motivated to explore more avenues beyond her areas of expertise. With a vision to contribute extensively to these goals, she intends to be a continuous learner in the field to ensure updated and streamlined initiatives at ground level. A compulsive book hoarder, Aakanksha is mostly found in quiet corners enjoying a warm and comforting cup of chai, listening to ghazals and chatting with her elderly mates who she believes are her alter-egos.
